13th Sculpture By the Sea 2017 l Cottesloe, Perth , Western Australia
The current Muslim rhetoric created a sense of déjà vu for Mah. He sculpted a 2.6m tall, steel paper-like sculpture titled, Homo sapiens sapiens, adorned it with carp motifs that are found only in common Chinese plates. The sculpture was recently exhibited in the ‘13th Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, 2017’. The effect was to simulate a migrant/ asylum seeker emerging from Cottesloe’s shores, a popular tourist destination in Western Australia, raising questions on racial tolerance and cultural acceptance.
