Artist Statement
This side of Yushan, a less general view, comes from my Instagram conversations with a Taiwanese mountaineer named Henry Tzeng. I have learned people connect with Yushan for various personal and spiritual reasons. The “sewing” visual language is my method of building a connection with the landscape. The work navigates beyond, examines the unseen happenings within. The visceral layers imitate the mountain veins formed naturally through the process of precipitation. These veins become a visual language, giving the mountain its ongoing character and identity. Painting Yushan brings forth an understanding of the mind—seemingly complex but soft and fragile; never still, neurons constantly signalling. It also resonates a contemporary notion of landscape composition; one that unshackles from stagnant form, emphasises fluidity and flowing energy. This Yushan metaphorically unveils itself as a beacon of resilience and its veins of time, elongating and navigating in becoming a beautiful refuge.
