Artist Statement
Guo Jian (郭健), Chinese-Australian artist and former People's Liberation Army propaganda artist, uses his art to speak against social oppression. Like his, my ancestry is an ethnic minority undergoing cultural displacement and assimilation. Artist Louise Bourgeois stated that the act of sewing can be compared to a process of emotional repair. This line painting-technique is my attempt to make repairs to Guo Jian’s fractured past. Lines move freely, deviating from determinist notions of identity, belonging and citizenship. An alternative site of belonging presents for those who feel marginalised from the imagined community invoked by the nation-state.
